Do I need a structural engineer to remove a load-bearing wall?
What an engineer checks before a wall is removed, what drawings are normally required and why temporary support matters during construction.
If a wall supports roof framing, a floor, another wall or part of the building’s lateral stability system, removing it is structural work. An engineer should assess the load path and document a safe replacement before demolition begins.
How to tell whether the wall may be load-bearing
Wall position alone is not enough. A wall running perpendicular to floor or roof members is often structural, but parallel walls can also support concentrated loads, bracing or discontinuous framing. Architectural drawings, roof-space access and an inspection may all be needed.

What the engineer designs
The replacement is usually a beam with suitable end supports, connections and foundations. The engineer checks strength, deflection, stability and the capacity of the structure receiving the new reactions. A small opening can still require substantial support if loads accumulate above it.
Engineering drawings should identify the member, bearings, posts, connections and relevant construction notes. Where existing conditions are uncertain, the design may nominate exploratory opening-up before finalisation.
Temporary support is part of the structural problem
The permanent beam does not make uncontrolled demolition safe. The builder needs a suitable sequence and temporary support so loads remain stable while the existing wall is removed and the new structure is installed. Complex or highly loaded alterations may require temporary-works engineering.
Approvals and certification
Approval requirements vary with the state, building classification and scope. Structural drawings and design certification may be required by the building surveyor, certifier or approval authority. Confirm the pathway before construction, especially where the work also changes fire separation, waterproofing or the external appearance.
