Extensions combine new loads and current building requirements with an existing structure that may be only partly documented. Good engineering begins by understanding both the architectural intent and the actual building.

The starting documents

The engineer normally needs architectural plans, sections and elevations, a site survey and any available existing structural drawings. A soil report may be needed for new footings. For alterations, photographs, measurements or an inspection can clarify the existing framing and load paths.

Coordinating structure with the design

Beam depths, post locations, bracing, floor steps and footing positions affect the architecture. Resolving them early protects ceiling heights, openings and usable space. Coordination also reduces site variations caused by structural elements being discovered too late.

What structural documentation covers

The drawing set may include footing and slab layouts, floor and roof framing, beams, posts, bracing, tie-down and connection details. The exact scope depends on the building and approval pathway. Design certification accompanies the documents where required by the relevant jurisdiction.

Construction-stage questions and inspections

Existing buildings often reveal conditions that were concealed during design. The builder should raise discrepancies before changing structural details. Required inspections should be booked at the nominated stages, before reinforcement, framing or connections become inaccessible.
